A Historic Town Growing Fast

Excavation contractors in Dayton work in one of the oldest and fastest-changing towns in the region. Abner Blackburn found gold in Gold Creek, a Carson River tributary, in 1849, and the town was named for surveyor John Day in 1861. Dayton sits at about 4,397 feet on a bend of the Carson River at the western end of the Twenty-Six Mile Desert.

Explosive growth

The population rose from 5,907 in 2000 to 8,964 in 2010 and 15,153 in 2020, a 69 percent jump in the last decade. New subdivisions mean pads, driveways, landscaping grades and outbuildings.

Old mill country

With Carson River water at hand, Dayton became the first major milling center for the Comstock; its population went from 78 in 1860 to 2,500 in 1865. Historic sites mean old foundations, debris and fill can turn up in digs near the old town.

Desert ground and the river

Away from the river, lots are open desert with sandy, rocky soil and sagebrush. Near the river, groundwater and floodplain rules come into play. Grading and septic designs differ between the two.

Common Dayton jobs

  • House, shop and garage pads
  • Gravel drives and RV pads
  • Septic and well trenching
  • Brush clearing and lot prep

Two kinds of ground

New subdivisions on the desert benches have dry, sandy and rocky soil that needs water to compact. Lots closer to the Carson River can have finer soil and higher groundwater. We look at where your parcel sits before pricing a pad or septic system.

Fires in the past

The old town burned in 1866 and 1870. Like other historic towns in the region, some lots near the original streets have burned material and old foundations below the surface.
