Clearing the Fuel Around Your Home

Brush clearing and defensible space work removes the sagebrush, rabbitbrush, bitterbrush, cheatgrass and small trees that carry wildfire toward homes, and clears vacant lots before building. Around Reno it is some of the most practical earthwork a homeowner can buy. About 80 percent of area homes have some risk of wildfire impact, and fires have reached neighborhoods more than once.

Recent fires close to home

The Caughlin fire in southwest Reno destroyed 26 homes in November 2011. Two months later, the Washoe Drive fire destroyed 29 more. In September 2024, the Davis Fire in southwest Reno burned 14 structures and forced about 20,000 people from their homes. Those fires burned through the same kind of brush-covered slopes that border many neighborhoods today.

What defensible space means

Defensible space is a managed area around a structure where vegetation is removed, thinned or kept low and green, so a fire slows down and firefighters have room to work. Fire agencies, homeowner associations and insurers publish the zone distances and spacing they want. We clear to the plan you are given, or walk the property with you to set priorities.

Doing it with machines

Hand crews are right for steep pitches and around landscaping. On open ground, a skid steer with a brush cutter or grapple or a compact excavator with a thumb moves far faster. Root balls come out, material is piled and either hauled or chipped. HomeGuide puts land clearing at $1,150 to $3,700 for typical projects; HomeAdvisor lists $1,400 to $5,800.

Keeping the soil in place

Stripping a slope bare invites erosion when a summer storm hits. Where we can, we leave low ground cover and roots on slopes, cut brush instead of grubbing it, and avoid disturbing more soil than the plan needs. On lots being cleared for construction, we strip only the footprint first.

Dry season cautions

Machines can spark on rock. During high fire danger, we follow any restrictions in place, keep water and extinguishers on site, and schedule work for cooler hours or wait for better conditions.

After the clearing

Defensible space is not a one-time job. Cheatgrass and brush sprout back, especially after a wet winter. Many owners have us do a heavy first clearing with machines and then keep up with lighter annual maintenance by hand or with a mower. We can also leave cleared areas graded so a mower or trimmer can reach them easily, which makes the yearly work far cheaper than the first pass.

Vacant lots before a sale

Owners selling raw land often clear a building area and an access route so buyers can picture the home site. A cleared, staked pad and a passable drive help a parcel show well without committing to a full grading plan.

Brush Clearing & Defensible Space Questions

How far from my house should brush be cleared?

Fire agencies and insurers set the distances, and they vary with slope and vegetation. We clear to the plan they give you.

Will clearing make my slope erode?

It can if everything is grubbed out. On slopes we usually cut brush at the base and leave roots and low cover in place to hold the soil.

Do you take the brush away?

Yes. Cleared material is hauled off or chipped, whichever fits the property and budget.

Can you clear a lot before I build?

Yes. We clear the building area, driveway and utility routes first, and leave the rest natural if you prefer.
